Premier League Title Race Gets More Interesting..... · Jan 14, 08:21 PM

This past weekend the Barclays Premier League returned after FA Cup action from the week before.

Rafa Benitez’s days appear to be numbered as manager of Liverpool after an awful draw against Middlesbrough. It is becoming increasingly clear that Benitez’s tactics just aren’t working as of this moment. This team relies entirely too much on Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. While many of the top teams in Europe rotate from time to time to keep their teams fresh, Benitez seems to rotate just for the sake of doing it. As a result, this team lacks cohesiveness, and it’s pretty clear that Liverpool are going to go another year without winning the league title. This club needs help, and they might have to start with looking for a new manager. You would have to imagine that Jose Mourinho would be one of the lead candidates.

Nicolas Anelka made his debut for Chelsea over the weekend against Tottenham. I’m still not convinced that he will be there for the long term, he always wants to find a better situation, and Chelsea won’t be any different. With that being said, he looked very good during the game. With the poor form of Andriy Shevchenko, Salomon Kalou, and Claudio Pizzaro, you would have to imagine that it’s going to be Anelka and Drogba who lead this team’s strike force. Earlier this season I believed that Chelsea wouldn’t be a serious contender for the Premiership title, but it’s starting to look like they’ll be in the thick of things come this spring. I still think Chelsea should find some more help up front, as well as the back. Drogba is sure to leave at the end of the season, and this team cannot rely entirely on Anelka.

Manchester United are increasingly looking like the favorites to repeat as champions. Newcastle just looked completely lost during the match, it’s not a surprise that Manchester United dominated this match with such ease. Cristiano Ronaldo is definitely one of the finest talents in the game right now, the only thing that is keeping Ronaldo from being the best in the world is his lack of form in the biggest games. He’s dominating the Premiership, but he needs to step up more in the Champions League games, we’ll see if he does that later this season.

Arsenal we’re very mediocre in their draw against Birmingham City this past weekend. This was a game that Arsenal should’ve won, you have to wonder whether Arsenal’s youngsters have what it takes to win the title this season. They are much improved over last season, but it just doesn’t look like they have the experience to match up with Manchester United this season. They are going to be a fine team in the future, I just don’t think that this is their year. They still aren’t consistent enough to be champions.
