New Years '08 Premier League Review · Jan 3, 09:05 PM

I hope everyone has enjoyed their holiday. I did not get to watch too many matches on New Years but I did catch the Arsenal-Everton and Liverpool-Manchester City matches over the weekend.

I was very surprised by the result at Goodison Park. I haven’t seen Arsenal play that badly in quite some time. They just weren’t passing the ball around like the normally do. The midfield was just not providing any service whatsoever. In the second half, Arsenal looked like a completely different team. Eduardo enjoyed a fine performance by scoring two goals, and he is now starting to justify his large price tag. I’m starting to think that Arsenal is really starting to feel the pressure despite the result in addition to the win at West Ham. Then again, the mark of a real good side is being able to win without playing well. With that being said, if Arsenal want to win the title, then they are going to have to go through Manchester United.

Despite no goals being scored, the Liverpool-Manchester City match was very enjoyable. Liverpool are definitely out of the title race by now, they seemed to be in control for large stretches, but they just couldn’t put the ball into the back of the net. It’s pretty clear at this point that this squad is still not strong enough to challenge for the Premiership title. Tom Hicks and George Gillett need to back Rafa Benitez and bring some more quality players on board. Torres has had a great season so far, but he’s not going to be able to do this on his own. I think Liverpool need another experienced defender to provide some depth in the squad. Not to mention the fact that Liverpool’s wing play is inconsistent at best. This club still has a long way to go.

I’ll be providing updates throughout the January transfer window this month, so keep checking back for more updates.
